A nuclear engineer has a range of responsibilities at a nuclear power plant, including helping to develop complex troubleshooting plans to support plant operations. The nuclear engineer also monitors, assesses, and improves the performance and reliability of plant systems and components.

Nuclear Engineer Skills:

  • Use system indicators to monitor equipment performance or degradation.
  • Identify and pursue material condition improvements, including predictive and performance-centered maintenance optimization.
  • Perform independent research, reviews, studies, and analyses in support of technical projects.
  • Design and oversee the construction and operation of nuclear reactors and power plants.
  • Monitor operations at a nuclear facility to ensure all safety rules and laws are followed.
  • Perform experiments that provide information about how to use and dispose of nuclear material.

Nuclear Engineers also need to:

  • Communicate effectively verbally and through writing.
  • Have integrity and follow the standards of the company and engineering profession.
  • Understand the importance of hard work and have a positive attitude.
  • Anticipate what needs to be done and take action.

Education/Experience Needed
